Pain: Life With a Chronic Illness
Pain. Many of us shy away from talking about pain (duh – it’s painful). We either don’t want to hurt anyone further, or we don’t want to help. However, Christ’s example teaches that we can’t escape pain or go around pain to either learn a lesson or get a reward. We have to go through the pain or help others through the pain.
Believing
Instead of New Year’s resolutions, I have one word that I focus on for each year. This isn’t something that I just draw out of a hat. I’ve heard some say that their word for the year chooses them. I’ve said that myself, but in truth, God gives me my word.
Are You For Real?
Philippians 1:10 “That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ.”
Surrender
Last fall, I drove my two teens to a youth conference. My husband and I had been praying the Lord would use the sessions to speak to their hearts. Well, the Lord used that conference to speak to me! The preacher for the afternoon session talked about Moses and then showed us the sign language for surrender. It looked like what someone would do for a policeman.
No Greater Companion
There is a lot of pain in this world: death of a loved one, war, disease, hunger, corruption, the list goes on and on. But some of the greatest pain one can endure is loneliness. It is an ache that cuts to the very core of who we are. Why is that? I believe part of it is because of the questions it brings to our mind. Does anyone see me? Does anyone care about me? Have I pushed people away by something I’ve done? Am I not good enough? Am I not cool enough? On and on and on our minds spin down the vortex of depression and despair. In fact a study done regarding suicidal tendencies lists “low belongingness” (one “characterized by feelings of estrangement from one's own community and/or significant group”) as a motivation.
Taking the Full Blast of the Roar
“…And There Was Darkness over the Whole Land…” “…like a roaring lion, prowling around, seeking someone to devour.”
Emmanuel’s Story
God’s Providences in Preserving the Life of Patrick Emmanuel—God is truly with him.
God’s Promise, My Peace
Psalm 16:5-11 “The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: Thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.”
Is Love Really “Just” Love?
“I’ve done a lot of thinking and learning, and I’ve realized that I’m bisexual.”
“I go by Sophie now, not Jason.”
“My sister wants me to meet her girlfriend.”
“You’re not loving if you don’t use gender-inclusive language.”
No More Tantrums
Have you ever seen a toddler who didn’t get her way? She pouts. She cries. She stomps her dainty, little foot and crosses her short, chubby arms. Her bottom lip shoots out, and she has no problem letting you know what she’s thinking. Sometimes, she even throws herself upon the floor and kicks and screams. (If you’ve ever wondered about the veracity of the sin nature, look no further than a toddler!)
What an Arrogant Judge and a Desperate Widow Can Teach Us about Prayer
“And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
Teach Them to Pray
“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” (Lk. 11:1)
Spiritual Gifts: A Display of Love, Humility, and Unity
What are spiritual gifts? What purpose do they serve? What are we, as believers, called to do with them? These are questions that many (if not all) believers have had to work through before. Spiritual gifts can be a hot topic in our culture today because there are such differing views on them. It is not uncommon to find believers fighting within and without the church over the various issues relating to them, and there are a couple things that I want to address in our discussion about spiritual gifts.
A Mother’s Prayers
Do you remember the early days of motherhood? Not the exhausted, desperate, trying-to-understand-your-baby days, but the first time you truly realized the blessings of motherhood. Perhaps it was as you watched your baby sleep, you recognized the gift you had been given. Maybe it was her first slobbery kiss on your cheek, his first steps into your waiting arms, or the first time you heard “mama” from tiny lips. Maybe it didn’t hit you until later in your journey—a milestone birthday, the much sought after driver’s license, a first date, graduation, or some other achievement. But all mothers eventually get it.
I Am A Mother
“Made it to my gate, and we’re getting ready to board. I’ll text you when I land in Charlotte.” It was Sunday, May 9th, and I was in Milwaukee, on my way home from my good friend’s college graduation. For probably only the second time in my life, my flight was actually on-time. I was tired. It had been a long weekend.
A Worshipful Woman Will Choose Well
But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part... Luke 10:42
Broken Curse
Stooping over the garden, the farmer hangs his head in immense heartbreak. Sweat drips down his brow. His calloused hands ache as he draws produce out of the compacted ground. Wincing in pain, he jerks his fingers back. Thorns had pierced him. It isn’t the first time…looking over the field, he sees rows and rows of them, choking the life out of a field that had at one time been overflowing with life-giving harvest.
A Worshipful Woman will Be Still
Be still and know that I am God… Psalm 46:10
A Worshipful Woman will Draw Near
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith… Hebrews 10:22
Becoming a Worshipful Woman
“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” Psalm 29:2
